In New Delhi, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has implemented strict measures against industries operating in unauthorized areas. They have sealed 84 complexes and disconnected electricity and water supply at seven locations during a recent crackdown. Unauthorized industrial areas are locations where industries operate without proper permission. There are 26 such areas, with at least 70% of the space being used for industrial purposes. Some examples of non-conforming areas include Khyala, Peeragarhi, Mundka, Hastsal, and Anand Parbat.
The Delhi government is making efforts to redevelop some of these areas to boost the city's economy, create employment opportunities, and support industrial units. In August and September, MCD teams inspected 520 units in these areas to ensure compliance with regulations. Licensing officers also conducted checks at 215 factories in authorized areas. During these inspections, it was found that 43 factories were operating without the necessary licenses. After receiving notices, 31 factories applied for licenses, while the rest faced disconnection of power and water supply for not responding or applying for a license within three days.
MCD officials mentioned that the authorities have taken action against units that were moved from residential to industrial zones as part of the MC Mehta vs. Union of India case.
